Integrated Architectural Environment

  IDEA is the Advanced Computer Environment for Architectural Building Design, covering all the range of the Architectural needs (model creation, rendering and virtual walkthrough), within a high productivity environment, based on a true model of the building.
IDEA is enhanced by two very useful and impressive components, seamlessly integrated within the same environment:

PhotoIDEA, a flexible rendering tool for high quality photorealistic representations inside and outside the building
WalkIDEA, the virtual reality walkthrough navigator of the package.

IDEA is exclusively based on object oriented philosophy, offering high productivity and accuracy of design, based on a true model of the building. IDEA works in its autonomous drawing environment (embedding IntelliCAD) keeping similar features to autodesk’s Autocad, and in particular common functionality, similar menus and standard Dwg file format (opendwg technology).

The last upgrade of IDEA (v. 9 NG -New Generation) introduces innovative object oriented techniques for unlimited power in the dynamic editing of the building objects, while at the same time it is empowered by the latest ICAD engine. As a result, IDEA supports the Architect to create various design ideas fast and easily, so that he can provide his clients with the optimal solutions perfectly presented.

Upgraded Features of the all new IDEA 9 NG:

• Better performance (i.e. speeds), smaller and “smarter” DWG files due to a new, innovative design of the building structure mathematical model.
• Expansion-Adaptation of the standard CAD commands (copy, move, trim, extend κλπ) to meet the needs of IDEA objects too (walls, openings, beams etc). 
• Enhancements of the “smart” functions & commands regarding the design & modification of walls (automatic unions, extensions, crosses etc), increasing the expert behavior of IDEA

• All the advantages of the latest IntelliCAD release (opendwg even for ACAD2006, multiple layout, audit & recover commands, new plotting functions and many others). The CAD engine of the new IDEA is the engine of IntelliCAD latest release.
• Advanced Solid Modelling environment, powered by Open CASCADE Technology for really impressive performances of the 3D Solid Modelling aspects and full ACIS compatibility.
• Advanced virtual reality features (WalkIDEA new generation) for higher performance of the IDEA walkthrough component plus the option of a real Stereoscopic view


General Description:

Walls & Openings: IDEA contains all the commands required for the unrestricted "shaping" of the basic building framework, such as parallel moving of walls, trimming, extending, joining and breaking walls as well as placing openings of any kind on them (windows, sliding, doors, openings, arches). During the initial drawing as well as in every modification in any stage, the drawing is automatically updated (e.g. placing an opening on a wall does not break the wall in two parts, the opening moves easily from side to side whether you are working in the ground-plan or in a 3D view, the wall is restored without leaving undesirable lines after you have deleted an opening etc). Furthermore, every modification brings about all the necessary readjustments (e.g. dimensioning, opening labels), so that the user may undistracted deal solely with the General Drawing and never with time-consuming and boring drawing tasks. Practically, there is no limit to the user?s freedom, having in mind that there is no restriction to work either in ground-plan or in 3D view or even in front view, cross-section and perspective, having at the same time the ability to see the results of his actions. In other words, the user works on his ?model?, from the beginning to the end, and not on lifeless drawings, having the advantage that any modification updates all the drawings instantly (for example, modifying a view updates the ground plan, perspective, axonometric etc). Finally, since IDEA/AutoIDEA manages the whole building uniformly, the user has -whenever he wishes- full supervision of the whole building (and not of each floor separately) as well as capabilities of its overall processing (copying typical floors, changes in building views and cross-sections etc).

Complex Elements (slabs, pillars, staircases, roofs, rails, gables, ramps etc): Every complex element constitutes an object with particular characteristics which can be edited by the user at any time. Access to these characteristics is achieved through a series of dialogue screens, in the background of which there are algorithms designed to cover every case. Each dialogue screen corresponds to a general algorithm special application that covers a wide range of cases, from the most simple to the most complicated (for example, a free way staircase for staircases, unequal inclination for roofs etc). Considering that these complex elements comprise objects, you may select any of those at any time and change any parameter you wish. These alterations are not only of static nature (e.g. change of slab thickness, roof height or number of stairs) but of dynamic nature as well (e.g. elongation of slab section, roof section collapse, widening of staircase, change of ramp grade). Moreover, the user may overview (in 2 or 3 dimensions) the results of every alteration or a series of a successive alterations-tests until a desirable outcome is achieved (e.g. placing outer staircase in perspective with the near wall window). It is obvious that the convenience in creating elements of whatever type (especially regarding roofs and staircases), not only through the default prototypes option but unrestricted, defined by the user from the very beginning, is perhaps the most important advantage of an Architectural Package.

Libraries: IDEA includes a large number of objects and symbols grouped into 4 large libraries, each of them containing 9 categories of 100 symbols each. Thus the package contains a total of 3600 drawings, many of which are provided ready for the designer to use. Note that the first 3 libraries refer to 2D, 3D and view drawings correspondingly, while the 4th library may be defined right from the start by the user, even regarding the categorising. In particular, as far as the 2D and 3D drawings are concerned, there are ten individual categories (General, Living Room Furniture, Dining Room Furniture, Kitchen Furniture, Office Furniture, Equipment, Plants etc) while the view drawings include existing drawings (plants, people etc) in view, for further configuration of the views. It is pointed out that the balustrade and opening (doors, windows etc) libraries are not included in the libraries mentioned above, since they are included in the package section described earlier. Moreover, there are hundreds of symbol and detail drawings within the program CD. It is quite important that the library contents may be edited through the Dynamic Library Editor of IDEA/AutoIDEA. This Dynamic Editor is a powerful and, at the same time, user-friendly tool, which enables updating (adding, modifying, deleting) any symbol as well as the easy integration of existing drawings into the package libraries.

Rendering: IDEA embeds PhotoIDEA, the flexible rendering tool which produces high quality photorealistic representations inside and outside the building.

Virtual Reality: IDEA is empowered by WalkIDEA, the virtual reality walkthrough navigator of the package. Gives the option for a real Stereoscopic 4D view through the special glasses.


IDEA supports the co-operation between the Civil Engineer, the Architect and the Mechanical Engineer, given the fact that the triptych IDEA-STRAD-FINE operates within the scope of the Integrated Building Engineering Environment by 4M and implements data exchange between the Architectural, Static and Mechanical projects.
